STEM cakes

Year 8 students spent a recent lesson in the Home Ec kitchens baking cupcakes. Why? Their STEM challenge was to use mathematical and/or scientific methods to make cupcakes that were consistent in both size and shape. This involved careful measurement of ingredients, weighing and distribution of batter, placement of cakes in the oven for optimum results etc. This fun task taught them how to set up and follow a scientific investigation process with mathematical measurement and statistics thrown in as well. The results were mixed but delicious!
